We did that for a while, just because it made sense. Didn't have the science. From the paper: Once patients were on CPB, the ventilation was set up at a respiratory rate of 5 inflations/min with air (21% oxygen) at a tidal volume of 6 to 8 mL/kg and PEEP of 5 cmH2O according to a standardized protocol. I can see surgeons complaining about the lung getting into their field of view every 12 seconds. Also PEEP (positive end-expiratory pressure) of 5 cmH2O is not a lot, but it might be enough to compromise visibility as well. [image: 1727869883772-screenshot-2024-10-02-at-6.49.58-am.png] The differences in vital capacity between the groups after negligible. Airflow (FEV1/FVC) seems to show a bigger difference (68% vs 75%). Though statistically significant, the question is always "Is it clinically significant?" Postoperative clinical complications are reported only descriptively as the trial was not powered for these measures. These occurred overall in 9/63 patients, of whom 5/33 were in the LFV group and 4/30 in the UC group (relative risk, 1.24 [95% CI, 0.39–3.91]). Lung complications, time fit for discharge, and adverse events postsurgery up to 6 to 8 weeks post discharge are reported in Tables S5 through S7. There were no postoperative deaths, myocardial infarctions, permanent strokes, or cases of renal failure requiring dialysis. No differences were observed for serious adverse events, intensive care length of stay, or hospital length of stay.

Colorado to pay Smith's legal fees. https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/colorado-pay-web-designers-legal-fees-after-losing-lgbtq-anti-bias-law-case-2024-09-30/ The state of Colorado has agreed to pay more than $1.5 million in legal fees to a web designer who won a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that the right to free speech allows some businesses to refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings. Colorado and web designer Lorie Smith's lawyers at conservative law firm Alliance Defending Freedom disclosed the accord in a court filing last week. A state board approved the amount, which was less than the nearly $2 million that Smith had originally sought after her free speech win at the high court. The justices in June 2023 ruled 6-3 in favor of Smith, who cited her Christian beliefs in challenging a state anti-discrimination law. The Colorado attorney general’s office declined to comment on the fee settlement.

@Mik said in Plastic grocery bag wins the race to the bottom!: I wonder how long it took it to get down there. They should date all the bags so we can track them, like Paddle-to-the-Sea.

As someone familiar with the space - the PE market has been hit HARD for the last couple of years. It's been very much on the upswing the last few months.

Big problem in South Korea. I read that more than 50% of the AI picture fakes of kids, school children, etc. are from Korea.

@Mik said in Rotisserie Chicken: I ordered Peruvian Amarillo and Planca pepper paste from Amazon. Recipe is in The Cookbook. Just using boneless chicken breast for this round as Janet doesn't like bone in chicken like I do. I prefer it. Oh man, 2/3 of the goodness of Pollo La Brasa is the skin.

One person, addressing spending and line item vetoes... Why are we spending a dime on DEI training and personnel? Why is the State Department sending billions of our dollars to foreign regimes that hate us? Why do we have more admirals than ships? The list could go on forever, but suffice it to say, one red pencil could make us fiscally responsible. Don't know about that, as the line item veto probably will never happen. But the six penny plan does give some political cover.

I worked with a path going through a bad divorce. He moved to another city for locum tenens work and rented an apartment to live in. He came home one night, staggering drunk. Tried to use his key to get into the wrong apartment. The woman in the apartment wakes up and gets her husband out of bed, who confronts the drunk doc at the door. A loud argument ensues and a fight starts. Hubby has a black belt in a martial art and quickly puts the doc down. Police arrive and put the doc in cuffs, while he's trying to tell them he can't breathe. They don't understand him or just ignore him. Dr. Seldon J. Deshotel died face down in a concrete parking lot from a broken hyoid bone.

When I was about 12 and visiting relatives in Michigan, a cousin and I were in the woods at night when darkness fell. It was a cloudy night with a very heavy tree canopy. It was dark - so dark that even after adaptation, we couldn't see anything even a foot in front of us. We were on a trail - it wasn't even safe to move. One could have opened a roll of film and it would have been safe. Just about the time, I was thinking we should stay-in-place and hope either for someone to come looking for us, I remembered I had a tiny AM transistor radio in my jacket. I turned it on - and it had a very weak little dial light - but it illuminated the whole forest - because there was nothing else out there. We made it back to the house w/o incident. We didn't mention the stupidity of our hike to our respective parents.

@Jolly said in Harris sez ...: I would. And nail it to the wall. She's really just following the FEMA guidelines. Equity is, after all the #1 goal of FEMA. https://www.fema.gov https://www.fema.gov/about/strategic-plan Note that having the country prepared is goal #3.
